As China thrust itself into the age of towering skyscrapers and fast growing industry, some parts still whisper of times seemingly once past. While many may expect Guangzhou to be any typical city filled with large factories, you can easily take a cab into the old town and see the city through a different lens. Many of the buildings look untouched, and even still proudly display traditional plaques and decor. Houses are grouped together and centered around courtyards where families gather to catch up. I kid you not, rickshaws were even still prevalent! I spent the day exploring small alleys and seeing what wares the little shops had to offer - from cigarettes neatly lined up inside an old glass case to live turtles and fish waiting to become pets. You would never have guessed that old town Guangzhou had so much history tucked into its corners.
